It is interesting that Carmy smokes in front of Nat, Richie and Marcus but never Sydney. Why doesn’t he smoke in front of her? Carmy is probably too busy staring at Syd that he doesn’t have time to smoke, or maybe his need to smoke decreases as he is with someone who brings him total peace. If Syd ever asked Carmy for a cigarette, would he give it to her or would he go into protective mode and state all the reasons as to why she shouldn’t smoke?

The parallel here is that both Carmy and Sydney stand by the motto when ’you go low, I go lower’ fuck being the bigger person - respectfully.

Syd maintaining emotional distance with Marcus vs. Carmy
One of things I noticed upon a rewatch of season one is that Syd made an offhand reference to her own similarity to her mother to Marcus, but kept him at an emotional arm’s length by not disclosing her death. She also allows Carmy to assume that her mother is alive when she mentions her mother’s birthday dinner to him at the beginning of season two. However, Carmy later disarms her by asking her upfront about her relationship with her mother. Syd’s response is confused and guarded at first, “Where did that come from?”, but in an effort to commiserate with Carmy, she lets her walls down after he discloses a bit on his and Nat’s own tumultuous relationship with Donna.
The affection between these two, colleagues who have only known each other for a few months, runs deep. Despite being reluctant to discuss personal and emotionally difficult topics with others, they readily volunteer details about themselves when given time alone with each other. I may be reaching here, but from my conversations with @devisrina, I believe that Carmy in particular is subconsciously advertising his romantic interest in Syd with some of the intrusive personal questions he asks her. Unwittingly, Carmy may also be so forthcoming about revealing unsolicited info about himself and his dysfunctional family life/mental health challenges to Syd in an attempt to give her a fair disclaimer about his hang-ups, should she ever reciprocate his feelings.
If we’re accepting ’Ebra, she was fucking beautiful, you would have lost your mind’ as Carmy tastes the dish Sydney was preparing was Carmy’s internal monologue about Sydney.
We also have to accept ’Delicious is Impressive’ as the camera transitions to Carmy is Sydney’s internal monologue about Carmy!
